Once your designing the environment, it is very essential to keep in mind the skills that the children in your group are learning and have mastered. The way you arrange your classroom, and the materials you fill it with can have a big impact on the kinds of play and learning opportunities you provide to your students. Activities involved and materials used in most early childhood classrooms are usually designed to meet the needs of many children whether they are disabled or not. When the classrooms dont meet specific children needs, they can usually be adapted or expanded in several manners to accommodate that childs individual needs. The adaptability of a classroom environment can assist children to compensate for their physical and character development . This allows children to use the skills they already have as they acquire new ones. Adaptability can clearly bring out the difference in a child just being present in class and a child being actively involved in class (Doctoroff, 2001).To develop adaptations and accommodations for children is a continuous process that involves every childs collaboration. Assessment of abilities of the child and the environment where the child will be spending time (Doctoroff, 2001). After fixing the goals, objectives are identified and expectations for the childs participation in that environment established and on implementation, the childs effectiveness is assessed regularly and changes made if need be. In order to meet a childs specific needs, changes have to be made in the design of the environment.Analysis of the 0-1 year old environment design. To effectively manage this group that is composed of children who dont even crawl there are some developmentally appropriate materials or activities t hat you could add to the classroom environment in order to address the childs skills. Changes of to the physical design of the classroom can be made promote optimal learning through play; among the changes to be made is excluding any sitting facility from the classroom as this may prevent or at times injure the child in the classroom. Also in the physical design exclude beds as they may fall if left sleeping. Some areas need to be included in the classroom in order to meet the needs of a one-year-old infant who is not yet crawling. This group of children is characterized by children with difficulty with hand-eye coordination. The children are unable to gesture and also verbally express their needs. Developmentally material such as charts that will enable them make much use of their eyes and hands should be included in the classroom setup. The children should be left free to touch and be keenly watched so that they dont get injure. In the physical design of the classroom objects should be eliminated from the room.
